Introduction

Hundreds of years prior to becoming the home of an educational institution and one of the most vibrant cities in Arizona, Tempe was home to prehistoric hydraulic engineers that we now refer to as the Hohokam Indians. Much of what we know about these ancient peoples has come from archaeology, and the ASU Tempe campus has been the home of several excavations revealing that portions of our campus were once part of a large, prehistoric Hohokam settlement. Additionally, archaeological discoveries on campus have shed insight on more recent historical aspects of the early history of Tempe to include the early Hispanic community known as San Pablo as well as the early settlers that once occupied areas of the modern Tempe campus.
