Step 2: Available Water

Our next step is to determine locations that are close to water. Most of the streams shown on the Tonto basin map are actually intermittent. To avoid considering these, we first exclude all streams that are classed as first order streams - that is, they have no other streams flowing into them. Using the remaining streams, we calculate a 500 meter buffer around them assigning all land inside the buffer a 1 and outside a 0. The red areas indicate land that satisfies the second criterion.
