Proyecto Arqueologico La Mixtequilla Image Archive

Documentation of Palm Image Archive

The image archive consists of folders with scanned images from 35mm slides, 35mm black and white negatives, digital photographs, and inked and pencil drawings.

The FileMaker Pro file contains the following data fields:

  1. Accession number. This is a unique number applied to each image as it is added to the archive. The numbers are assigned continuously, starting with 1.

  2. Original project photo number. Each photograph was given a number that referred to the field season, roll number, and frame. Drawings do not have such numbers, and the column should be left blank unless at least the year is known. Example of photo number: 2000.1.3, indicating the year 2000, roll 1, frame 3.
    a. In the case of combined images (such as the interior and exterior views of sherds) the comment section should indicate the second project photo number.

  3. Feature or collection number. Each feature or collection recorded during survey has a unique number. Artifacts are identified by the number of the collection, and sometimes two sides of the artifact are shown.
    a. Enter "multiple" and put collection or IF numbers in comments for mixed photos.

  4. IF. Isolated Find number.

  5. Site name. Some centers have a local or project name, and views of mounds at the center, or of other features there, may be identified by the site name.

  6. Category. Artifacts are labeled according to a category designation to facilitate searches. The categories are enumerated below (categories may be added):

    Bone artif (artifact

    Chert (knapped)

  7. Sherd code. The pottery has been classified into categories with a number and name. There is also an acronym, usually 4 letters.

  8. Figurine code. The figurines have been classified into categories with an F number.

  9. Medium.
    BW = black and white
    C = color
    D = drawing

  10. Comments. Other information written on photo log originally or added later.

  11. Special Notes: 1984-1985 artifact photographs.

    Artifact photographs taken in 1985 for the objects recovered during the 1984 and 1985 mapping of Cerro de las Mesas were reclassified in 1986 after a redesign of the typology. This particularly affected the classification of some pottery. The polychrome pottery previously rather coarsely grouped in code 7 was considerably revised. The figurine typology was also revised in 1988 (for all prior seasons). The classification given in the image archive reflects Stark's assessment of the photograph itself, the new typology, and the description originally written in the photograph log. The "Comments" section will indicate "revised type" for any changes from the original log that are entered into the image archive documentation. Miscellaneous artifacts are less likely to have undergone changes.
