"ARTISANS"

It's been an archaeological puzzle for over 50 years.
Recent excavations near Roosevelt Lake, northeast of Phoenix, may shed new light.

Ornaments and Jewelry

Stone ornaments including numerous beads and pendants have been recovered from Tonto Basin sites. Shell ornaments were not as plentiful as stone jewelry, perhaps because shell had to be obtained through long-distance trade from argillite and steatite. Scale is shownm in centimeters.

Textile Imprint on Ceramic Sherd

Baskets, cordage, mats and sandals were woven from agave, sotol and yucca fibers. Granaries for food storage were made from a woven twig framework covered with adobe.

Textile Imprint on Ceramic Sherd

Woven items like textiles and baskets do not usually preserve well in open sites (non-caves). However, fragments and woven impressions left in clay give archaeologists clues about weaving techniques in the Tonto Basin.

Textile and Weaving

Fabrics were woven from cotton, some in intricate patterns. The shirt illustrated here was preserved in a protected cave site in the Tonto Basin for some 700 years.
