This is Flat Stanley.
He is dressed as an archaeologist ready to explore the prehistoric Hohokam culture of Arizona.
Stanley came for a visit to the Archaeological Research Institute (ARI) at Arizona State University in Tempe, Arizona in March 2004.
Stanley helped the ARI staff teach children and adults about archaeology at the Archaeology Expo and SEE ASU. Stanley also visited some important Hohokam archaeological sites and learned something about the desert vegetation along the way. The web site is to help Stanley share his adventure in archaeology with you.

Arizona is located in the Southwestern portion of the United States. It is a very dry, desert area. We average about 360 days of sun per year with only a few inches of rain, usually falling in the winter and the monsoon season (about July-August). Otherwise it is sunny all the time with a winter daytime temperature around 75 degrees and a summer temperature around 105 degrees.
Tempe, Arizona is a town located within the Phoenix Metro Area. You can see by the map below that Tempe is completely surrounded by other cities (such as Mesa, Phoenix, and Chandler). We have nowhere to grow but UP!
Here is a view of our downtown area (Click Here * You need to have access to the internet for this link to work).
From these photos you can see Tempe Town Lake (which is actually a part of the dry Salt River which has been converted into a short lake in the center of town), Tempe Butte, and many of our downtown businesses. See how bright and sunny it is here!

This is a fun map that shows you where Tempe is in relation to Disneyland in California, or the Grand Canyon in northern Arizona. Rocky Point, Mexico is a favorite destination for many Phoenix residents in the Spring. It is a nice beach town with lots of shopping and good restaurants.
