During the 2000 field season exploration of an area to the west of the pyramid that appeared to have been a residential and/or administrative complex (referred to as Complex 6 of N5W1) was begun. Because of its location so close to the pyramid it was felt that investigation of this complex could help explain the function of the complex and the nature of activities that were carried out in the vicinity of the Plaza of the Moon. |

The residential complex itself was located within the protected
tourist area. Before beginning the excavation it was necessary to remove
vegetation and debris that covered the ruins of the complex. In some places
evidence of earlier excavations Ð possibly dating from the 1960's - was
found, once again covered with the passing of time. |

The complex is made up of four main platforms surrounding a patio. Although the investigation of this area is still in the preliminary stage, several walls that mark the boundaries of the rooms of the buildings have been identified. Evidence of several looters' pits in the floors of the platforms was also found. The excavated materials suggest the presence of an obsidian workshop close to this location, but the social function of the complex is not yet understood. (lower left) |
