Offerings at the Feathered Serpent Pyramid: Greenstone Miscellaneous

Greenstone objectsIn addition to beads, earspools, nose pendants, "resplandores", figurines, and cones, several greenstone objects of other kinds were found in the central area of the FSP. Some were from Grave 14 and others were from the looted graves or the looters' tunnel. According to the stratigraphic data, the following pieces found in the looters' tunnel seem to have been offerings originally deposited in Grave 13.

Greenstone objectA small plaque (Privious photo:left) in the form of a temple was found in the disturbed layer near the floor of Grave 13 . It was incised on both sides with the same design to represent a temple-platform. In the same layer of Grave 13, two small button-like round objects (Previous photo:bottom right) were found. One greenstone pendant in the form of a scroll with a perforation (Photo left) was found in the lowest disturbed layer of Grave 13. The presence of a hole indicates that it functioned as a pendant.

Greenstone axGrave 14 also contained unique greenstone objects. One miniature ax (Photo right) was found near the cranium of individual 14-B. The surface was smoothed and one end had a long sharp edge. Several unique beads and plaques were also included in Grave 14. They were found among many other offerings of various materials, including simple greenstone beads. They would have been simply variations of beads or pendants deposited as general offerings.
