Archaeology of Teotihuacan, Mexico
Greenstone figurines were found in only a few graves
at the Feathered Serpent Pyramid. The majority were concentrated in
the central grave (Grave 14), but several were also uncovered in
front of the Feathered Serpent Pyramid (Pérez 1939;
Rubín de la Borbolla 1947; Cowgill and O. Cabrera 1991). At
least five small greenstone heads, perhaps used as pendants, were
uncovered at the top of the pyramid (Marquina 1922:158-161). These
latter ones were exclusive to this location within the burial
complex.
There is a complicated variety of figurines found in the central
grave, examples of which are shown in this photo. Figurines in
various sizes, forms, and body proportions, carved in different
techniques and elaborateness were uncovered from the central and
southwestern parts of Grave 14 (Figure). All figurines were
discovered in similar condition in which they appear to have been
scattered on the bodies of the sacrificed victims.
