Table: S3GS

Contents: Shaft Straighteners

Description: This is a stage III analysis which includes a the subset of groundstone artifacts classified as shaft straighteners in the S1G analysis. Shaft Straightnerers are hand-held artifacts of steatite (talc or soapstone) that have one or more deep U-shaped grooves in their upper surfaces. These tools were heated and used to straighten arrow shafts. Some grooves may have been used to polish beads. Variables measured focused on documenting the morphological characteristics of the grooves and overall shape of the tools.
