Contents: Ceramic Buffware and Brownware Attribute Analysis

Description: This analysis includes both surface collections and excavations for 4,306 decorated buffware and brownware ceramics recovered in the RCD analysis. Two levels of analysis were conducted. The first includes basic typological, temporal, and vessel shape. Paste and temper characterizations are also presented in an effort toward identifying potential production regions. Quantities used in this analysis are vessel counts rather than sherd counts.

The second-level analysis was restricted to those contexts that were least temporally mixed and that had the largest sample sizes. These sherds were used to develop more comprehensive type descriptions and definitions. Two additional second-level analyses of the Buffware and Brownwares included petrological examination of sand-tempered buff and brown wares (see RCDBTEMPER), and quantitative assessment of decorative traits of samples of Gila Butte Red-on-Buff from the Hedge Apple site (AZ V:5:189/1605) and Meddler Point.
