Advancing Access to Digital Data: Strategies for Preserving Archaeological Digital Records

ABSTRACT Since the advent of computer technology, archaeologists have been designing, implementing, and archiving digital databases. However, once digital files pass into the curation realm where they are often shelved like paper copies, the media and data are on the fast track to obsolecence given the rapid turnover of hardware and software. Archaeological repositories, such as the Archaeological Research Institute (ARI) at Arizona State University (ASU), are faced with the challenge of providing continuing access to several uniquely designed archaeological research databases and related files that were generated from various combinations of software and hardware. To ensure preservation of these data, the ARI staff curates these data electronically. We discuss methods of preserving the original data structures and metadata as artifacts of the projects that generated them, but also present strategies for integrating these unique datasets into regional databases that will provide continuing access through established standards and online availability.
